Manasquan, N.J. -- New data shows the average MCOs is twice as likely to offer coverage for psychiatric benefits than long-term care benefits, according to data mined from the third edition of The Managed Care Information Center's "National Directory of Managed Care Organizations" (http://www.healthresourcesonline.com/managed_care/14dmic.htm).
Of the more than 1,600 MCOs included in the analysis, MCIC's research staff found more than 56 percent of MCOs indicated they offered coverage for psychiatric benefits -- compared to only 24.7 percent that offered coverage for long-term care. In fact, a comparison with the data from the second edition of the directory revealed coverage for psychiatric benefits was the top-ranking benefit included in MCOs' coverage packages for 1998 and 1999.
Through the analysis, MCIC determined the national average for MCO-coverage for several benefits, including: alternative medicine; behavioral health; chiropractic; dental; homecare; pharmacy mail order; podiatry; physical therapy; transplant; vision; workers' compensation; wellness; and skilled nursing facility.
Ranking under psychiatric, transplant was the second most covered benefit -- covered by 52.3 percent of MCOs. Chiropractic and homecare benefits tied for third, with 50.1 percent of MCOs offering coverage.
The remainder of the top 10 most frequently covered benefits were (in descending order): podiatry, 47.2 percent; skilled nursing facility, 46.9 percent; dental, 43.5 percent; vision and wellness (tied), 43.3 percent; and pharmacy mail order, 37.3 percent.
"These general findings on benefit coverage are just one example of how the data found within MCIC's ‘National Directory of Managed Care Organizations' can be used to determine pertinent, nationwide industry trends," said Gwen Lareau, director of research for MCIC.
