Physicians and Hospitals Join Forces
To Meet the Challenge of Managed Care Markets
Manasquan, N.J. -- More than 150,000 physicians and 1,100 hospitals/medical
centers practicing within the United States have joined together to form physician
hospital organizations (PHOs), according to data collected and verified by The
Managed Care Information Center for its new reference book, The National
Directory of Physician Organizations.

In a PHO, physician and hospitals typically have equal ownership in an
entity that provides a broad array of provider services to managed care
organizations. PHOs are organized to provide joint managed care contracting
between hospitals and physicians.
The first reported formation of PHOs began in 1983 increasing steadily until
1994 when, in just one year, the number of PHOs doubled.
The formation of new PHOs continued to increase in both 1995 and 1996, The
Managed Care Information Center found.
"The number of physicians and hospitals following this trend is expected to
continue on an upward spiral as managed care continues to dramatically influence
healthcare providers," said Gwen Lareau, special projects director at The Managed
Care Information Center.
A ranking of the top five states according to PHO penetration by The
Managed Care Information Center's research analysts reveals that Texas has the
most PHOs with 71. Ohio has the second highest number of PHOs with 43,
followed by Illinois -- 42, Pennsylvania -- 36 and Florida -- 33, according to
research results tabulated from data collected during the third quarter of 1997, for
The National Directory of Physician Organizations.
The National Directory of Physician Organizations details more than 600
PHOs nationwide. Each PHO profile includes names and titles of key executives,
number of associated physicians, state of incorporation, market area, PHO
functions, affiliated hospitals and the management services organization (MSO)
associated with the PHO. Other physician organizations profiled are independent
practice associations (IPAs), physician practice management companies (PPMs)
and primary care networks.
The National Directory of Physician Organizations is indexed 11 ways
by each of the seven executive titles; PHO organization name; IPA organization
name; MSO name; and affiliated/participating hospitals all cross-referenced to
their detailed profiles for easy reference.
